What is a datathon?

A datathon is a weekend-long event where you can collaborate with other students on a data science project to learn new skills, create social impact, and innovate new solutions! There’s also plenty of time for networking with our partners, meeting other hackers, and attending workshops and mini events! In short, it’s a weekend dedicated to collaboration, data science, and community.

Who can attend?

Any university or college student 18 or older can attend! Recent graduates of up to one year post graduation can also participate!

How much does it cost?

The Rowdy Datathon is completely FREE to attend, thanks to our partners. You don't have to worry about a thing - we will provide meals, snacks, t-shirts, swag, prizes, and more all weekend long!

What should I bring?

The Rowdy Datathon is a weekend-long event, and we want to make sure you’re prepared!

You are encouraged to bring a change of clothes, any hygiene items you may need, and a computer and chargers for your devices!

While we cannot have designated sleeping areas per university policy, attendees are more than welcome to bring a pillow and a blanket and get comfortable if you’ll be working late! We’ll be providing food, beverages, and snacks throughout the event, but you’re more than welcome to bring your own, the San Pedro I building is equipped with microwaves and refrigerators for your use. If your laptop does not have a USB port and you already have a dongle, we recommend you bring it. If you need a dongle but don’t have one, no worries, we’ll take care of it.

What if I don’t know anything about coding or data science?

No worries! The Rowdy Datathon is for everyone, regardless of experience! We will have plenty of mentors, resources, and workshops to help you learn throughout the weekend no matter what your skill level is.

How big can my team be?

Teams can consist of up to 4 hackers! While it isn’t required, we do encourage attendees to participate as part of a team. Don't have a team? No worries, we will have an opportunity at the start of the event for you to meet other hackers and form teams!

How long is the Datathon?

This year, our datathon will be a 33-hour event (Saturday 9am - Sun 6pm). 24 of these hours will be dedicated to hacking! Hacking will begin at 12pm on Saturday and will run until 12pm on Sunday. All projects must be submitted by 12pm on Sunday.

What if I’m not a UTSA student?

No problem! The Rowdy Datathon is open to ANY college, university, or vocational student over 18 years old. We're so excited to see students from all over collaborating and innovating together at this year's event!
